Capacity Marking

Stay compliant with capacity marks for precise, legal drink measurements.

Stay Compliant with Capacity Marked Drinkware

For businesses serving alcohol in licensed establishments such as bars, pubs, restaurants, hotels, and cafes, ensuring accurate drink measurements is a legal requirement. BBP’s capacity-marked drinkware guarantees that you’re serving the correct volume every time, giving both businesses and customers confidence in every pour.

A capacity mark indicates that a glass has been legally verified for accurate measurement. It can appear as a line mark or a brim measure, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations. The specific mark required depends on the country of sale, with the UKCA mark used in the UK and the CE mark used in the EU.

UKCA Marking (United Kingdom)

UKCA marking ensures that glassware meets strict legal requirements for serving alcohol in the UK. The markings include:

  • A line mark as well as the capacity of that line measure in numbers or text (e.g. 25ml, 125ml, third pint, 4 pint)

  • A brim measure just has the capacity of the glass, often marked on the bottom of the vessel.

  • A UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) mark is a product marking that indicates a product's conformity with applicable UK legislation for goods placed on the market in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales)

  • A UK approved registration number - ours is 0120, and issued by SGS, the world leaders for Inspection & Testing.

  • The capital letter "M" and the last two digits of the year they were capacity marked, all surrounded by a rectangle. The "M" marking means a marking applied to a measuring instrument, the height of which is equal to that of the CE marking.

  • Manufacturer's mark or name (we use bbp)

  • Manufacturer's address (we use WF14 8LY)

Line-Measured Glasses

A clear, visible line on the side of the vessel which indicates the correct legal capacity, making it easy to pour accurate servings.

Brim-Measured Glasses

The UKCA marking is located on the side or base of the glass, ensuring compliance when filling to the brim.

CE Marking (European Union)

CE marking ensures that glassware meets strict legal requirements for serving alcohol in the EU. The markings are the same as UK markings, except for:

  • The UKCA mark is replaced with the CE mark.

  • The UK approved body number is replaced with an EU approved body number (0071 issued by LNE)

Do You Need Capacity Marked Glasses?

You are legally required to use capacity-marked glasses when selling alcohol by the glass in regulated environments. However, you do not need UKCA or CE marking if:

  • You are serving alcohol for free (e.g., complimentary tastings)

  • You are using other legally verified measuring devices such as capacity-marked optics or jiggers

  • The drinkware is being used for home or personal use
